North Maardam Man Allegedly Threatened to Shoot Girls for Playing on His Lawn

Criminal charges have now been brought against the 59-year-old North Maardam man involved in an armed standoff with police over the weekend. Scott Douglas Johnston is accused of three felonies for assault with a dangerous weapon and terroristic threats.

Court documents say Johnston came out of his home Friday evening and pointed a shotgun at two neighbor children, ages 8 and 9, threatening to shoot them if they didn’t stop playing on his lawn. The kids immediately ran inside and told their parents and police were called. Authorities set up a perimteter around Johnston’s residence and he finally exited after a 4 hour standoff. A 20 gauge shotgun, with a loaded magazine, was found under his bed.

Police say under questioning, Johnston admitted to having “a good buzz going” from alcohol and telling some children not to run through his yard, but he denied pointing his gun at anyone. Johnston also said he didn’t remember anything else about the night in question, until he was awoke by police yelling at him to exit the residence.
